biography. . . the long version
childhood, music all around, me and sis playing in the church folk band that run by dad, brilliant old-school music teachers, wednesday is wind band on bass clarinet and jazz band on tenor sax with snazzy gold waistcoats, listening to ella and stan, mj and queen, taping the top 40 all on my akai ghettoblaster, then train trips to london, guildhall school of music and drama junior department to study on clarinet and piano, junior nyjo, sax lessons with tim garland and matt wates, i am inspired . . .
leaving home, off to leeds college of music, the shabby college bar becomes home for three years, surrounded by great players, nikki iles is my piano teacher the whole time and she is a huge influence, i leave college with an honours degree in jazz studies plus awards for best finals performance and best saxophonist in my year . . .
turning pro, getting married, coming runner up in young jazz musician of the year '98 gives me the opportunity to do a week at ronnie scott's, move down to london, i gig with the national youth jazz orchestra, tour with triphop band morcheeba, write my first album of songs, discover the hammond organ and start up a trio with my husband . . .
all change, back to my west country roots, raise a family in bristol, a city i grow to love for its music community, the friends i make and the woods at the bottom of my garden. . . .
during what can only be referred to as the 'child rearing years, i play a part in forming several bands including a jazz piano trio, my soul flavoured originals band, a pretty kicking wedding band to pay those bills, a second reincarnation of the hammond organ trio . . .
i'm also lucky enough to be involved in many other projects with some fantastic musicians and friends, playing straight ahead big band swing, afro beat and soukous, esoteric jazz, folk, americana, blues, pop, soul, funk, classical, new orleans mardi gras, devised theatre scores, panto madness, latin club tracks, solo gigs in song circles, the variety is something i love.....
CHECK OUT THE MEDIA PAGE TO HEAR SOME OF WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO....
in the past five years, music has taken me to all the beautiful venues in my home city, all over the uk . . .
to a serbian jazz festival in the grounds of a castle, ronnie scott's and pizza express in soho, a music festival in a beautiful polish amphitheatre, venues with panaramic sea views in devon, dorset and cornwall, glastonbury, my bro's pub every single new year's eve, the national theatre in london, again the variety makes me feel very fortunate....
as for all musicians (and the rest of the world)
2020 has presented me with challenges, less performance work has given me time for thinking,
new directions, making time for more composition and songwriting, i am looking forward to launching a new originals project soon......
I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED XX
